Subic Bay

Subic Bay is a coastal town and port located to the north of Manila and to the west of Angeles. You can get here directly from Manila at either Pasay or Cubao bus terminals depending on where you stay in Manila, it will take you about 3hrs from Manila depending on what terminal you leave from and of course the traffic, you can also get a sea plane here directly from Manila or if you are in Angeles it’s only about 1hr away by bus from Dau terminal. Subic Bay itself is a freeport zone and a lot of trade enters and leaves the port on a daily basis. There’s also some heavy industry in the bay which provides jobs and employment in the local area. The bay itself is quite large and scenic as several mountains spill down into the bay and the sunsets in the evening can be spectacular as the sun dips behind the mountains and spills into the sea.

There are quite a lot of local style resort accommodations all along the bay that range from 2 star right up too 5 star options, whilst there are quite a few decent restaurants located in the area as well. Subic Bay is a very popular weekend get-away spot for people and groups from Manila so sometimes it can get crowded, especially in the summer months.

The girl scene here is not very big as there’s only really Barrio Baretto that has a strip of girly bars along the highway, you can’t miss them at night due to the bright neon lights and loud music as well as the girls standing outside trying to drag you in by shouting ‘Hey Joe!’. Most of the girly bars here seem to be extension of some bars in Angeles, and apparently a lot of the girls rotate between Subic Bay and Angeles if they want to get away from Angeles and stay at the beach. This place can be comparable to Sabang in Puerto Galera, Mindoro, however there’s not as many activities to do in the daytime and the beaches aren’t as nice, however it’s still a very beautiful area and a great quick escape from Angeles.

There is a healthy ex-pat resident population in Subic Bay with the majority being ex US Military servicemen who have retired in the local area but seem to have some small business in the freeport trade. There’s not a massive Korean or Japanese contingency here and that means that Subic is one of the few spots in the Philippines where the girls all seem to be ok with non Korean or Japanese men, so happy hunting if you’re not Asian in Subic, and even if you are i’m sure you’ll have no issues!

Key pointers

If you are staying in Angeles for a while it is probably good for your health to use Subic Bay as your respite location for a couple of days. Angeles is the best pound for pound and the most pussy per square inch in the Philippines in terms of pure girly bar action, however after 3 or 4 days it all seems to blur into one giant vortex and even the most seasoned veteran has to ‘pull out’ and take a breather i.e. Subic Bay is the most convenient location for you to do that and it still has a decent girly bar scene!

Summer months here can be a lot more fun if you are looking to party as the clubs in Olangapo are full of single Filipinas from Manila and so are the beaches, bars and restaurants in the day time.

Stay at one of the resorts near Barrio Baretto and you can pretty much walk everywhere i.e. no need for trikes.

Getting to Barrio Baretto from the Olangapo mall (this is where the bus will drop you off from Dau) is quick and easy as there are plenty of vans waiting for passengers to jump off the bus.
