Baguio is the mountain region of Northern Luzon and home to one of the only places in the country that can drop well below 10Deg C on a regular basis as it is actually quite high up, not snow capped mountains but the occasional frost in the morning is quite common. If you’re going to Baguio you aren’t going for the girly bar scene, there is a small scene here but it’s set up purely for the locals, you’re going here for the tourism and scenic mountain landscapes.
Baguio is pretty easy to get too from Manila as busses leave from Cubao station pretty much every 30mins and it takes about 8hrs to get to Baguio from there. There are some really nice places to stay in Baguio in terms of mountain retreats etc. Overall Baguio is really popular with Filipino tourists as they all seem to want to go here to experience ‘cold weather’ as well as go strawberry picking.
Baguio is a great place to take a girl if you want to cuddle up under the blankets and in front of an open fire.

La Union is a seaside town located about 1hr bus trip west from Baguio. This place is extremely popular amongst the ‘hipsterish’ and ‘bohemian’ crowd from Manila as its considered the ‘surf capital’ of the Philippines. However, if you are a decent surfer don’t get too excited as most Filipinos think that 1ft swell is ‘dangerous conditions’ and it’s funny to watch all the guys and girls rent mini mals from the local surf shop, strap on a leg rope and then proceed to get pictures taken of themselves doing different poses with the board in the shoreline. So basically this is ‘kook’ central for surfing. There can be some ok swells here if the conditions are right but if you are coming here for the surfing better head to Baler on the east coast on Luzon or Siargao as they have bigger swells and much better breaks, plus you wont spend a lot of your time dodging kooks on mini mals.
La Union itself is a pretty happening little town as there’s heaps of bars and night clubs to party at due to the massive back packer contingency which has seemingly colonized this place. Don’t expect much in the way of girly bars but again there are plenty of normal girls here looking for a surfer guy to boast to about their friends back in Manila, yes that’s right if you can actually surf here you should find it pretty easy to pick up the local girls and the Filipino guys will think you are Kelly Slater or Mick Fanning which can be pretty fun.
Like most places WeChat and Tinder can be very very successful in La Union, alternatively if you have a regular girl we are 110% sure that she would jump at the chance to go to La Union with you so she can get those all important photos of her holding a surfboard and adopting the surf culture completely for life (or at least until she goes back to Manila, lol!).
